Kayaking the mangroves on a guided tour with Amigos Kayak y SUP Tours is a great way to experience the peaceful nature in Costa Rica. The Terraba-Sierpe wetland mangrove system is one of the largest mangroves in Costa Rica and is an important part of the local biodiversity that is enchanting to witness. Teeming with wildlife, this expansive mangrove system plays an important role in the protection of the intense environment of the Osa Peninsula.

Tours Details

Depart from Plaza Ventanas in Ojochal at a time that is dictated by the tides.

Travel to nearby Coronado to launch into the stillness of the mangrove with a tour of approximately 3 to 4 hours. After this relaxing journey, we will explore a nearby waterfall that is nestled in the jungle and sure to amaze. This bonus trip to El Pavones waterfall includes a very short and easy hike to where you can see the majesty of this natural phenomenon.

Your tour includes:

  • Transportation – We provide transportation by a private and comfortable bus from the meeting place to the start of our tour.
  • Equipment – We have both single and tandem kayaks for our tours. We select kayaks for comfort and efficiency.
  • Safety – We provide the required personal safety equipment including personal floatation devices (life jackets) and helmets when required.
  • Food/Water – Water, native fruits, snacks.

What you should bring:

  • Dry Bag
  • Water Shoes/Walking Shoes
  • Swimsuit or non-cotton clothing
  • Binoculars
  • Sunglasses with sunglasses straps attached
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+ and water-resistant)
  • Lip balm (SPF 15+)
  • Insect repellent (as needed)
  • Gratuity for the guides (greatly appreciated)

Reminder:  Items you bring must fit in your dry bag or they will be at risk of getting wet.  When packing for this kayaking trip, think lightweight and compact.

Great Morning Trip Our family enjoyed the kayaking trip. It was an early morning trip (because of the high tide needed) which was perfect as we saw lots of wildlife. The first part took us through thick mangroves until we reached a river. It was an easy paddle up river to a spot we got out and stretched. Then a return trip. Saw monkeys, lizards, crabs, and numerous bird species. On the drive back we stopped at a waterfall and got to swim. Tony did an excellent job!

Peaceful morning nature SUP. Great SUP morning on Mangrove with Axil. Peaceful and easy 2hr paddle through the tranquil mangrove. We saw lots of birds, a few canine, the magical waterfall trees and we rested in nature. Booking was easy, Amigos was very professional and the guides helpful and knowledgeable. Felt very Safe and easy for a 50+ female traveling alone in Costa Rica. I was in good hands.

Great Guides and Tours We (14 people) took multiple tours over several days, organized and led by this outfit. All went off on schedule, without a hitch. Employees are all very friendly and knowledgeable, and were excellent guides to all things local! Most impressively fun experience was the the surfing lessons on Rama beach. Axel was a great instructor, and the waves were awesome (had big and small ones going on).I definitely recommend Amigo Kayak and SUP Tours. They really did a great job and helped make our week long vacation enjoyable.

Fun SUP sesh under the sun Had an amazing time! It was really well organized (Axel answered all my questions with tons of info ahead of time) and a lovely trip. The river and mangroves tour was just long enough and the bonus waterfall excursion was a great, refreshing perk! Axel’s a super fun (fully bilingual!) guide with tons of knowledge of the mangroves and Costa Rica. And he has a great eye to spot wildlife! ++The individual fruit Tupperware is a really nice touch!

What a great adventure to do! This is also good for persons with mobility issues. The mangroves are interesting and the guides informative. They were accommodating and helpful, since it is tide dependent they reversed the waterfall and kayak portion so that we could experience both adventures.

We had a wonderful kayak tour of the mangrove forest with Tony. Everything from the initial communication to the pickup to the tour worked perfectly well. As it was very hot that day we were especially thankful for the break with fresh and cold fruit and ice-cold water. The final cooldown in the waterfall El Pavon was also great. Definitely recommend this tour!

We had the most wonderful experience kayaking through the mangroves and then going to a mangrove with Tony and couldn’t recommend this tour highly enough. Tony and Axel were both fantastic. Everything felt really organized and taken care of. Once we arrived at the mangroves, Tony took us on a beautiful and relaxing tour. He spoke perfect English and was so knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. We loved stopping to take a break and eating the delicious fresh fruit they had packed for us. After the kayaking, we went and swam in a beautiful watering hole mostly frequented by Ticos. It felt like discovering a secret gem! Tony also gave us lots of excellent restaurant recommendations and even was kind enough to call one of the restaurants for us to check their hours. This was by was by far the highlight of our time in Costa Rica!
